The Letters:  Here are a collection of family letters written from June 1849-Feb 1864 contributed to us by Jo Hinds.  While the letters might be from one family member to another, many many people are mentioned.  Jo has done an absolutely wonderful job of researching these families and the people mentioned in the letters.  I have put the entire .pdf document online.  To view it, you simply need Adobe's Acrobat Reader which is a free download from www.adobe.com.  There is also an Index of Names mentioned in the letters and listed below is who each letter is from, to and the date of the letter.

This transcription is a compilation formed by using the original letters, and arranging them in such a way that the resulting work as a whole is an original work.

Explanation of Notations
These letters were transcribed by Jo Ellyn (Laird) Hinds, who is the third greatgrandniece of Peter and Julia Adaline (Lindsay) Laird and third great-granddaughter of Alexander and Jane (Miller) Laird.

All of the original letters were previously in the possession of Mary (Laird) Larson, the second greatgranddaughter of Peter and Julia Adaline (Lindsay) Laird and third great grandniece of Alexander and Jane (Miller) Laird. She has donated these original letters to the Illinois Historical Library in Springfield, IL. A copy of this transcription has also been donated to the IHL in Springfield, but full copy rights are maintained by Jo Ellyn (Laird) Hinds. Mary resides with her husband Ed Larson at Sioux Falls, SD. A previous transcription was done by Cathy Brunner, of Mount Carroll, IL.
